Smol - Cleaning Products Review

Updated: Aug 17, 2021

All of Smol's products are available on their website here using my referral link.

Smol are a relatively small company that currently mainly produce cleaning products. They claim that since their launch their customers have helped save over 300 tonnes of plastic and 1000 tonnes of chemicals! Smol's dishwasher tablets and their laundry capsules are all plastic-free and vegan. They also recently bought out cleaning sprays and fabric softer which are refillable recycled plastic bottles. I shall try these and review them in the future. Twenty-four of either the dishwasher tablets or the laundry capsules cost only £4.50. Smol works on a subscription service. You tell them how often you put your washing machine and/or dishwasher on and they ensure your products arrive on time. Smol also offer a free trial if you cover the £1 postage, so you can try the products first and make your mind up yourself. I highly recommend trying Smol. I think they're one of the best sustainable companies I have found so far.

I can't remember how I came across Smol; I assume an online ad. I was previously using Ecover to wash my clothes (and for basically all my cleaning products) before trying to go plastic-free. If you get 25 washes worth of Ecover from Tesco, it's £7 on their website. Suppose you get 24 washes worth of Smol it is £4.50 and delivered to your door for free. Alternatively on the Tesco website, if you were to get 20 pods, of a non-plastic-free and non-cruelty-free brand, it would cost you £2.75. For the sustainable alternative that is a difference of only 5p per wash!

Initially, I ordered the bio laundry capsule. I don't have sensitive skin or any skin problems, so I bought this one without second-guessing it. However, my boyfriend has eczema, and it flared up slightly due to the bio pods. We really easily just managed to swap them to the non-bio subscription online, and it was all sorted. Since switching to the non-bio ones, his eczema has been fine.

I like the laundry capsules because they do have a scent, but it is not overly strong. With Ecover, I find there is no scent in the laundry powder; I'm kind of used to this as it is what my parents used when I was growing up. I have enjoyed nicer smelling laundry than I grew up with though... Smol uses ethically sourced essential oils to scent their laundry capsules. This makes them not overly scented but also not completely lacking either.

I'd never had a dishwasher before moving into my new flat in August 2020. Until I come across other plastic-free, vegan dishwasher tablets, I don't have anything to compare to Smol tablets too. They work, and I am satisfied with them! I don't intend to stop using them. For those who have children, it may be worth knowing that despite the Smol products coming in card packaging they have still got a (plastic-free!) child lock device on them.

On the Smol login page, it allows you to calculate your impact since subscribing to Smol. Since September 2020 (up until April 2021), I've saved nearly 1kg of plastic and 2.4kg of chemicals! I cannot recommend Smol enough. I'm so lucky that I happened to stumble across this company as my first sustainable cleaning product company. Without a doubt, Smol gets 5/5 stars. In the future, I will try their other products as well as some other sustainable cleaning products.
